Choosing a Hotel in South Lake Tahoe
• A WorldWeb.com Travel Guide for South Lake Tahoe, California.
South Lake Tahoe, California has enjoyed lively and prosperous visitor traffic since the early 1900s when well-to-do individuals of San Francisco heard of the spectacular natural beauty in the area and started to visit and stay in some of the then newly built hotels. When casinos and gambling halls arrived in the area during the 1940s its future as an attraction to visitors was signed and sealed. Today, visitors and residents alike enjoy the calming and majestic sight of Lake Tahoe with its stunning crystal blue waters, to be followed by the thrills of entertainment at casinos just over the state line in Nevada. As if this isn’t enough to bring people flocking to the city, South Lake Tahoe also lies in close proximity to a couple of ski areas, including the enormous Heavenly Ski Resort, which overlooks the town and draws visitors from around the world.
Accommodation choices are plentiful in South Lake Tahoe and there are a large number of hotels and motels to satisfy those looking for hotel-style lodging. The hotels are generally gathered into three different areas.
PARK AVENUE TO STATELINE
Firstly from Park Avenue east roughly four blocks to the border with Nevada. The concentration of lodgings is greatest here and the hotels and motels include kitchenettes, some of which have exclusive use of private beaches and indoor swimming pools. Close proximity to casinos and the Heavenly ski lifts is also part of the deal when staying at several the area's motels and some have full service spas, hot tubs and saunas. The Secrets Inn encompasses old-world and alpine-style suites, while Embassy Suites offers upscale luxury in over 400 two-roomed suites with a heated indoor pool and close proximity to the ski lifts.
Stateline in Nevada is literally on the state line, a block across from South Lake Tahoe and there are a large number of lodging options here that are very close to the casinos, including the upmarket Kingsbury of Tahoe Resort, which offers luxury with a fitness center, game room, racquetball courts and a sauna, as well as the option to stay in two-bedroom condos with mountain views.
LAKE TAHOE BOULEVARD
The second cluster of lodging options is a short distance west along Lake Tahoe Boulevard, which turns towards the lakeshore. These accommodations provide close proximity to the lake and beach, and stunning views over the aquatic blue. They also afford guests a little distance from the casinos if that is required. Several chain options as well as some moderately priced independent motels are here and most have either indoor or outdoor swimming pools, some of which are heated.
WEST OF SOUTH LAKE TAHOE
Finally, there are a few places to stay even farther west in South Lake Tahoe proper for those wanting a cheaper option. A couple of nationally recognized budget motels will keep visitors’ loose change in their pockets, at least until they visit one of the casinos. In addition, these hotels are close to the small Lake Tahoe Airport, which services general aviation and corporate executive travelers.
